Mentored Self Appraisal

Purpose

PACT's Mentored Self Appraisal (MSA) method provides a cost-effective means of establishing an estimated baseline capability profile with respect to a maturity model. By populating MSA Appraisal Surveys, organizational personnel share insight into the pervasiveness of current practices and improvement priorities within their areas of expertise. The data is compiled and reported in a manner that "guestimates" or "approximates" the current capability level and indicates which practices the process executors feel should be improved.

Method Overview

The initial MSA is typically conducted over a 2-5 day period and is facilitated by an MSA Mentor.

A facilitated session is conducted for each Process Area within the MSA's scope. Only people who actually execute the related practices should participate in the session. Although data could be gathered with fewer respondents, a minimum of five per process area is typically recommended for purposes of data integrity.

The data is tabulated and analyzed as each facilitated session concludes; the results for all in-scope process areas are presented at the end of onsite period.

The Findings Presentation consists of a series of "Quad Charts". Each Quad Chart displays the average of the participants' responses with respect to current use and priority to improve. One Quad Chart is generated for each specific goal within a process area, and one additional Quad Chart is generated for the rocess area's generic practices at capability levels two and three.
