CMMI Primer
Not familiar with the CMMI? No problem -- here's a quick overview of the model and some key definitions.
The foundation for the "Capability Maturity Model Integration" (CMMI) was originally developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie-Mellon University in 1993. It is a model designed to help organizations implement optimal practices in software engineering and development, as well as provide a method for assessing an organization's software development capability, as defined by it's process development 'maturity.' Maturity levels range from 1 (least mature) to 5 (most mature). The CMMI can be applied within any industry, and is helpful to any organization which develops software for their own internal use or as part of their business offerings. Achieving a certain maturity level can be a worthwhile goal for any organization looking to optimize it's development practices to achieve business-related objectives, or it can be a requirement of working as a supplier to other companies, particularly in the public sector.
